Down To You by M. Leighton

Oh, holy steam pot! A little tea-cup I am not. I am a cauldron of boiling over, molten lava, liquid sex bubbling in my veins, fogging my brain and escaping into the atmosphere. Seriously, I'm convinced that the heat this book inspired in me escaped, rose and altered the local weather patterns. My apologies to anyone in the near-by area suffering from a sudden warm front. My fault. And, Michelle Leightons'.

I picked up Down To You for several reasons. First and foremost is my consummate love for any words laid to page by this amazing author. Seriously, I'd read the instructions that came with a box of Tampax if written by this woman. And you know, I've pretty much had those instructions down for a few decades. Just showed my age, huh? Ah well. It's kind of important, I'd say. Why? Because this is an adult novel. Not for the young readers, just young at heart.

M. Leighton long ago captured my heart with her work in The Blood Like Poison Series, The Madly Series, Caterpillar, The Reaping, The Reckoning. Usually known more for her work with horror with a touch of romance, I was super excited to see how she'd fair her hand in a contemporary adult romance. I know, I know. I'm probably messing up all the 'categories' and 'genres' here. Oh well. Every reader takes away something different from a novel. Those descriptions are a reflection of what her work embodies to me.

So, I started my read of Down To You late, late Saturday night. Sunday afternoon, I was about to turn to pg. 1 of the last chapter. I had to stop. I had to send a text. It read:

Stupid books. Stupid boys in stupid books. They make me fall in love, and the girl always gets hurt. And, I KNOW it's coming, but I read anyway. But then, this well known, Favorited author of mine went and threw a twist that I never saw coming. Now, my stupid heart is all stupid sad. It's stupid.

Now, don't take that too literal. That was just me quickly venting about my reading experience. Nothing is stupid about this story. Nothing. I've read it all. Seriously, you guys know how much I read. It's very rare that I don't see a twist or surprise coming. M. Leighton got me, though. This book gave me butterflies. I'm talking akin to Jamie McGuires Beautiful disaster butterflies. The 'hurts so good' type. Where when the heroine takes a hit, you feel it too.

A story with a down-to-earth girl, Olivia trying to overcome her bad-boy habits ... with her heart and mind stuck juggling between a set of twins. TWINS! Both not like the other, yet sinfully delightful at the same time. Literally, my only qualm with this read is the name Olivia. It has nothing to do with the story, just that I personally know an Olivia and she embodies everything opposite this character, so it confused my tiny brain from time to time. But that's neither here nor there. Cash and Nash... the brothers... mmmm. No issues there!

M. Leighton really laid some good work down on this one. I'd go as far as to say this is my favorite of all her work to date. I can really see her growth as a writer. Much of her work has been of the paranormal realm. This book is down to earth, and just the linguistics of it really got me hooked! The character dialogue in Down To You really had me cracking up, and I could totally envision much of the thoughts/convos flowing directly between my bff and myself, or directly out of my own brain all together. The flow was so natural, the progression so easy. It's an understatement to say that I couldn't put it down. My poor kids had a late breakfast, a quickie lunch, and ordered out supper. Mom was in the zone, and they know not to interrupt for fear of their lives. haha.

Whether you're already a fan of her work, or just exploring for the first time, I employ you to pick up this read. You won't be sorry. Did you SEE me compare it to Jamie McGuire's Beautiful Disaster? That's about as high of a recommendation as you can get from me. Seriously.

And If you haven't already, don't over look her other work. Good stuff, kids! Good stuff.

Book Description

 September 22, 2012
New York Times and USA Today Best Seller

Genre: Adult Contemporary Romance
(NOT appropriate for younger readers)

The scorching tale of one girl and two brothers in a love triangle...that's not.

Olivia Townsend is nothing special. She's just a girl working her way through college so she can return home to help her father run his business. She's determined not to be the second woman in his life to abandon him, even if it means putting her own life on hold. To Olivia, it's clear what she must do. Plain and simple. Black and white.

But clear becomes complicated when she meets Cash and Nash Davenport. They're brothers. Twins.

Cash is everything she's always wanted in a guy. He's a dangerous, sexy bad boy who wants her in his bed at any cost. He turns her insides to mush and, with just one kiss, makes her forget why he's no good for her.

Nash is everything she's ever needed in a guy. He's successful, responsible and intensely passionate. But he's taken. Very taken, by none other than Marissa, Liv's rich, beautiful cousin. That doesn't stop Olivia from melting every time he looks at her, though. With just one touch, he makes her forget why they can never be together.

Black and white turns to shades of gray when Olivia discovers the boys are hiding something, something that should make her run as far and as fast as she can. But it's too late to run. Olivia's already involved. And in love. With both of them.

Both brothers make her heart tremble. Both brothers set her body on fire.

She wants them both.

And they want her.

How will she ever choose between them?

Blurb: She'll have to believe the unbelievable to survive.

The doctors have told Kay that she will die before she reaches her eighteenth birthday. Her mother’s determination to save her life leads them to a move outside of Asheville, NC to a new set of cancer specialists in the hopes to help her. But it’s not what Kay and her Mom find in the doctor’s offices in Asheville that lead them on the journey to save her before time runs out. It’s what Kay finds in the woods outside of Asheville, and an inhumanly gorgeous guy named Ryan, instead.
Myths and fairy tales come to life before Kay’s eyes, bringing her closer to the ultimate cure if she can stay alive long enough to get there. And if the cancer doesn’t kill her before she finds the cure the secrets her mother has hidden from her may be the beginning of the end.
Can she reach her destiny before tragedy strikes?

Excerpt

All I could think was that if I concentrated on cleaning his gash then maybe I wouldn’t make myself look like an idiot anymore. The concentrating helped because I could just feel his eyes on me. I wanted to ask him what he was thinking, or why he was staring, but I thought it was better to just stay quiet and clean his arm. I worked quickly and when I was done I looked up into his face with a somewhat steely determination not to make an ass out of myself anymore today. “Hey, you think you can handle it if we clean it off with alcohol. I bet it’s going to sting like a bitch, but I’m afraid it might get infected if we don’t.”
“Yeah, that’s fine.” He said as he concentrated on my face.
“Are you sure? Because a cut like that, I bet it’s going to hurt. Like hurt a lot.” I inwardly debated if he was trying to be brave, or if he was nuts enough that he just didn’t care. My bet was nuts.
Ryan put on a confident face and said, “I think I can handle it. But if it makes you feel any better I promise I won’t scream like a little girl.”
Well at least I could go get the alcohol without feeling like I hadn’t warned him properly. “Ok, wait here. I’ll go get the alcohol out of the bathroom, and I’ll be right back.” I headed out of the kitchen and turned right down the hall towards that bathroom. I snagged it out from underneath the bathroom sink cabinet and hurried back to the kitchen because some part of my brain still couldn’t believe that there was an exceptionally hot half naked guy in my kitchen. But sure enough I rounded the corner and he was still standing there waiting for me. “So, do you want me to like pat it on with the rag or…”
“No just pour it straight into the wound. That’s the best way to avoid any infection.” And with that comment he positioned his arm over the sink so that we wouldn’t make a mess. I just shook my head. He really was nuts.
“I’m betting twenty bucks you scream like a girl.” I chided.
“And I’m betting a date with you that I won’t scream like a girl.” He stared intently at my shocked face with a cocky little grin as I absorbed his comment in.
“Ok.” Really? I thought to myself. That’s all you can come up with is ‘ok’? He’ll think you’re oh so smooth now. In fact, I’m sure I just won the ‘smooth award’ somewhere.
I shook my head and gingerly started to pour the alcohol into the gash that ran nearly from his shoulder to right above his elbow. As I braced myself for the scream that I was sure he had coming, when the alcohol hit his wound he gasped from the pain and then snapped his jaw shut. His face became clenched and contorted from pain and his entire body literally locked up in a spasm of sorts. Jerking the bottle upright and setting it on the kitchen counter; I stared into his distorted face. He was in so much pain that I had absolutely no idea how he was not screaming. His body shuddered and then I saw where there were beads of sweat on his forehead that started trickling down his face.
I inadvertently took a step back from him afraid that he was going to crack and instead of screaming throw a punch or something. Then the strangest thing happened; I felt a blast of hot air that was strong enough to lift my hair a little as if it was in a breeze and then there was a rich smell of some kind of flowers I couldn’t identify that practically engulfed my senses. My body started tingling in response to something, and I felt a flash of heat ripple through me. Then as quickly as it had started, it was over. I looked around my house somewhat wildly for a minute trying to figure out what just happened. “What was that? Ryan did you feel that?”
“Feel what Kay? The alcohol burning the crap out of my arm. Yes, I most certainly felt that.” He was looking at me somewhat analytically, and I thought that maybe he was thinking that I belonged in the loony farm or something.
I was seriously going to have to reread the side effects of that new medication I was on. Maybe I was having hallucinations? But it felt so real. In fact, my body was still humming with something that I couldn’t place.
“Right, you’re right. It must have been the heater coming on or something. I just wonder when my mom got that smelly thing. It has such a strong smell of some kind of flower.” I started scanning the wall outlets for an air freshener plug in and then the counters for some kind of new smelly candle. Nothing. There had to be an explanation for it. The hot air came on and hit whatever air freshener Mom had put out, right?
“Kay, are you all right?” The way Ryan was watching me now I was obviously never getting that date. What a freak he must think I am.
“Yeah, yeah. I’m fine. Sorry, I guess I’m a little out of it today. How’s your arm? I guess we should wrap it up now.” I reached for the ace bandage and shook my head to clear the crazy fog that was still in there. I glanced up into Ryan’s face before I touched his arm just to make sure that he was ok with me trying to take care of him.
He must want me to stand, like, fifty feet back so he didn’t catch my crazy.

Author Bio:

Jessie Lane is the writing team of Crystal Leo and Melissa Pahl. The two sister-in-laws share a great love of breathtaking romance, cliff hanging suspense, and out-of-this-world characters that demand your attention or threaten to slap you around until you do pay attention to them. Because really, it is ALL about the characters. (They’re kind of megalomaniacs)
When not losing themselves in a story, they remember they have real lives. Crystal lives in Kentucky with her husband and two little girls who plot daily the many ways they can drive their poor mother crazy. At the end of the day, Crystal calls Melissa and threatens to ship her two nieces to their favorite Aunt with lots of air holes punched through their box. Melissa answers Crystal’s crazed calls in Washington state where she lives with her husband and big furry baby of a Rottweiler named Yuffie, and reminds her that children are not shippable.
This is their first novel, but they are all geared up and excited to be releasing other projects soon!

When Carter, the one-night-stand from her past that changed her life forever, shows up in her hometown bar without any recollection of her besides her unique chocolate scent, Claire will make it a point that he remembers her this time.

EXCERPT:
One
Someone was speaking. No, he was yelling. It sounded angry, but my body refused to cooperate with my commands to open my eyes and be nosy. I tried to move my arms and again, there was no help from my limbs. It didn't strike me as odd until then.
I heard, "All I'm saying is that you need to be on time from now on." Then a slammed door startled me. I felt my lungs suck in breath that burned and hissed unlike anything I'd ever felt before. It was as if my lungs no longer performed that function and were protesting.
Then I heard a noise, a gaspy sound, and my cheek was touched by warm fingers. "Emma?" I tried to pry my eyes and felt the glue that seemed to hold them hostage begin to let go. "Emma?"
Who was Emma? I felt the first sliver of light and tried to lift my arm to shield myself, but it wouldn't budge. Whoever was in the room with me must've seen me squint, because the light was doused almost immediately to a soft glow. My eyelids fluttered without strength. I tried to focus on the boy before me. Or maybe he was a man. He was somewhere in between. I didn't know who he was, but he seemed shocked that I was looking up at him.
"Emma, just hold on. I'm your physical therapist and you're in the hospital. Your…" he looked back toward the door, "parents aren't here right now, but we'll call them. Don't worry."
I looked quizzically at him. What was he was going on and on about? That was when I saw the tubes on my chest connecting my face to the monitors. The beeping felt like a knife through my brain. I looked at the stranger's hazel eyes and pleaded with him to explain.
He licked his lips and said softly, "Emma, you were in an accident. You've been in a coma. They weren't sure if…you'd wake up or not."
Of everything he just said, the only thing I could think was, 'Who's Emma?'

The Setenid Blight

Not your typical YA paranormal romance! The Setenid Blight books are a tale of almost too real apocalyptic proportions. I read the first book in the series, Altered many months ago. It stole my heart from the very beginning. Many months later, I was contacted with an e-mail letting my know that Divided, book 2 was (finally) available. I can honestly tell you that my fascination with YA paranormal romances got it's beginning right here! However, I no longer really see that this series truly fits into that category. You see, we're not talking about the over-done, but always fun vampires, witches, werewolves, etc.

The Setenid Blight Series covers a near adult girl who's going through hell. Literally. When her town suddenly becomes swept with a mysterious infection which turns its victims into murderous psychopaths, all hell breaks loose! Evie (Piper) first must deal with the loss of her parents, the separation from her big brother, Harm... falling for another while actively in a relationship with Jay, who has been - up to this point the love of her life. She finds her soulmate in Devlin, but all hope of happiness is ripped away when she is then forced not to only deal with all of this, but SURVIVE as well! This mysterious infection really hits home for her and she becomes a target early on. The infected lose all sense of humanity, develop the tell-tale unnatural green eyes, and serve one purpose and one purpose alone - to kill and destroy! I know, that sounds a little zombie-like but it's NOT! The infected victims are not brain-less killing machines. They are still the people they were. Just instead of protecting and nurturing those you love, you become hell bent on violently destroying them. It's a pretty scary concept if you think about it. Your brother, sister, friend, husband, parent, CHILD now lives only to kill you with their bare hands and their determination and inhuman strength means that there is next to nothing you can do to stop it.

What makes that even more scary? When the government gets involved! Take every movie you've ever watched about an epidemic illness that sweeps the country, killing hundreds of thousands... how does the gov't react? They down-play it first and foremost. Cover it up even. Then, they try to use it to their benefit. Finally, they cut their losses. Abandon it's citizens, its towns. Quarantine the innocent and healthy, leaving them no hope for survival.

This is what you get in The Setenid Blight Series. AND... MORE! You also get love, perseverance, hope, romance, drama and oh! so many chills. This story literally gives me chills as the insanely talented author, Kimberly Montague lays it all out in a way that you can REALLY picture it all happening to a town near you, to a friend, to YOU! I've recently finished book two and **lucky me** got an advance-reader copy of book three, Uncontained - which is due out September 19! Also, a peak at Manipulated - A Setenid Blight Novel - due out AUGUST 19!  - Manipulated gives a more in-depth look at the infection itself, what it's like to be infected, to go through the awful quarantine, etc. I am a crazy busy woman right now, but if even three minutes can be spared, my nose is in this series!

Please, I BEG you, do not hesitate to dive into this so-close-to-reality-it's-scary  piece of 'fiction'. I'm going to take it as a personal insult from anybody who doesn't follow this awesome piece of advice!

Follow this amazing, talented author on all of her outlets, and look for her in the future. I really think this is a name you can expect to hear BIG things about in the future!

Please, check her out on all of her outlets:

Kimberly Montague

Please, go check out this amazing woman, behind a favorite series of mine! I'm currently diving into newly released book two, and really think you'd all enjoy this piece of awesome!

This is the first book in the young adult paranormal romance series Setenid Blight.

DESCRIPTION

Deep in the Sierra Nevada mountains there lies a cave that has been the source of local legends for centuries. Purported to be the home of an ancient deranged and vicious animal, many have gone in seek of it, but what lies within is far more dangerous than a mere creature.

17 year-old Piper “Evie” Kenley’s life has been anything but calm, however, the turmoil of losing almost her entire family is nothing compared to the difficulties she is about to face.

Robbed of all other alternatives, she moves in with her boyfriend of seven years and his family only to find that she has an intensely electric connection with the handsome and popular Devlin Vaughn- Captain of the football team. Try as she might, she cannot avoid this connection they share leaving her with a choice to make. But just as she begins to feel her life is in order, one camping trip and a testosterone-driven dare involving a cave with a deadly and contagious secret will send her entire world in to complete chaos.

Recommended for ages 15&up

After surviving the first wave of the Setenid Blight Infection, Piper "Evie" Kenley is expected to return to her normal life. But evading the grasp of murdering Infecteds seems small in comparison to surviving the heartache of being apart from the love of her life, Devlin Vaughn. This isn't an ordinary long distance romance though. Devlin has been taken from her by the military and used, along with other non-psychotic Infecteds to fight the murdering, out-of-control Infecteds sweeping across the nation. Now, they must plot to find their way back to each other and out of the military's grasp, out of the path of destruction left by the raging Infection, and away from those who always seem to be lurking in the shadows trying to tear them apart. Recommended for ages 15&up

You WON'T regret picking these two gems up! Kimberly Montague was one of the first indie authors who drew me into the paranormal-romance genre. I've waited months for the sequel, and now... no waiting for YOU!
